A cherished shop on the Groentenmarkt, with a history that has been passed down through generations.

Our story
Tierenteyn was established at the end of the 18th century, when Petrus Tierenteyn produced his first mustard. It is said that he eavesdropped on Napoleon as he explained the secret to a good mustard. Legend or truth, who knows? One thing is sure, the flavour and the story are inextricably linked.

Several decades later, Adelaïde Verlent, Augustus Tierenteyn’s widow, moved the shop to La demi Lune, on the Groentenmarkt, where it can still be found today. This is where the art of making mustard has been passed down ever since, with the same rigour and care. It is ingrained in this place, this city, and these people. Because that is the only way to create the kind of flavour that you won’t taste anywhere else.
Our mustard
What makes our mustard so special, you may wonder? Its simplicity and sharpness. We still scoop it out of a wooden barrel, the old-fashioned way. Our mustard has a smooth texture and a spicy kick, balancing sharpness with just the right touch of sweetness.
Besides our smooth and coarse mustards, we also produce pickles and other condiments, all with the same dedication to quality and taste. You can taste this dedication in every jar which is why people across Belgium and far beyond love to serve our condiments.
Our Shop
Cross the threshold of ‘La demi Lune’ at 3 Groentenmarkt, and you will discover a listed shop interior. The well-worn doorstep and original fittings immediately take you back in time.
Under the shop floor lies a cellar with traces of Romanesque architecture. This is where we make our mustard. From there, it is transferred to the wooden barrel in the shop, where we scoop it out for you into our hand-turned stoneware pots or glass jars.
Not sure where to find us? Just look for the bronze crescent moon that guards our shop. Once there, you too will embrace the Tierenteyn tradition.
